JC Chasez, former *NSYNC star, returns with Playing With Fire, a musical concept album inspired by Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Read about his creative journey, *NSYNC reunion highlights, and more.

JC Chasez: Twenty Years After Schizophrenic — A New Musical Concept Album

It’s been two decades since JC Chasez launched his solo career with Schizophrenic, his first solo album post-*NSYNC. After exploring judging roles and recent reunions with his *NSYNC bandmates, Chasez now brings us an unexpected project: Playing With Fire. Co-written with long-time collaborator Jimmy Harry, this concept album is based on Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and serves as the foundation for an upcoming musical.

From Pop Music to Musical Theater

“We knew we wanted to write a musical,” Chasez shares in a recent Billboard News interview, “we just didn’t know what about.” Known for their pop music background, Chasez and Harry embraced the challenge to create something beyond typical pop, with more depth and creative freedom. For inspiration, Chasez credits Jesus Christ Superstar, recalling that Andrew Lloyd Webber’s approach of releasing a concept album first helped them realize the potential of such a format for Playing With Fire.

*NSYNC Reunions and Future Possibilities

In addition to this new venture, Chasez recently reunited with his *NSYNC bandmates for two songs: “Better Place” (featured in Trolls Band Together) and “Paradise” from Justin Timberlake’s Everything I Thought I Was. Chasez reveals, “We’re all great friends, and we’re always talking.” Though each member is busy with solo projects, the door is open for future collaborations: “Anything’s possible in the future,” he adds. “It’s always gotta be for the right reasons.”

Celebrating Christina Aguilera’s 25th Anniversary

Another potential reunion on the horizon involves Christina Aguilera. Chasez, a former fellow Mouseketeer, recently celebrated the 25th anniversary of Aguilera’s debut album. When asked about a duet, Chasez is enthusiastic: “If it was the right thing and organic, I’d be happy to sing with her anytime.”
